Dr. Canham graduated from the University of Illinois, College of Dentistry in 1993. Dr. Canham practiced in a large group practice in suburban Chicago for 7 years before relocating to Hilton Head Island in 2000. Once on Hilton Head Island, Dr. Canham purchased the practice Southern Smiles, located in a 900 square foot office located in the Courtyard Building just off of the Sea Pines Circle. In 2005 Southern Smiles relocated to mid-island to the brand new Lifespan Building. In 2013 Southern Smiles moved for a third time to our completely renovated, state of the art 3900 square foot facility at 15 Lafayette Place.
In his now 20 years in dentistry, Dr. Canham has completed nearly 1000 hours of advanced training in many new procedures and innovations in modern dentistry.
Some of the areas that Dr. Canham has advanced training in, and now offers to patients of Southern Smiles include Cosmetic Dentistry, Orthodontics, Implants, Endodontics (root canals) Sedation Dentistry, TMJ Dysfunction, Sleep Apnea and Cosmetic Dentures. He belongs to several professional associations both in dentistry and in the community.
Dr. Canham and his wife Jeanie are residents of Hilton Head Island and have four children aged from 7 to 22 years old. Dr. Canham is an avid sports fan. In his free time, Dr. Canham enjoys golfing, coaching, going to the beach and spending time with his family.
Maggie Humbert has decided to join Southern Smiles Dentistry after being a patient for many years. Maggie, her husband Tracy and 3 children have all had their Orthodontics completed by Dr. James Canham. After many dental visits throughout her orthodontic treatment Maggies love for dentistry and changing peoples lives grew and she then decided she wanted to come to work for Dr. Canham. You will see Maggie as you enter the doors at Southern Smiles with her radiant bright smile. When Maggie is out of the office she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.
Jennifer has been in dentistry since 2005. She started her dental career while living overseas on MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, while also pursuing a criminal justice degree. She has been a part of Southern Smiles Dentistry since 2006 as a Dental Assistant, Lab Assistant and is now Business Coordinator. Throughout her career, Jennifer continues her education, attending many dental seminars and countless hours of continuing ed on-line courses. She is also a member of the American Association of Dental Office Managers.
Her daily role is to oversee office operations and to ensure our patients experience here with us is a positive one! Jennifer is there, every step of the process, assuring that everything runs efficiently and smoothly for each patient. Her goal is to incorporate the wealth of knowledge and patient care that she has acquired to equip our team to best serve our patients and their families.
Jennifer has a passion for LIFE. Her time away from the office is spent with her 4 children, outdoors, sporting events, traveling, biking and most of the time you will find her on the Beach.
Kelly has been a part of Southern Smiles for 3 years and is a wonderful asset to our office as our lead dental assistant. Kelly assists Dr. Canham in all dental procedures but is particularly skilled in oral surgery, dental implants, restorative and cosmetic dentistry.
Coming from Venezuela, Kelly is a liaison for our Spanish-speaking patients and performs basic business office procedures such as scheduling appointments, handling the phones and helping facilitate check-in/check-out for our Hispanic patients. Kelly particularly enjoys the cosmetic procedures performed at Southern Smiles including smile makeovers, Zoom Whitening and being our digital photographer. When not at the office, Kelly enjoys spending time with her family.
Tammy Walters is originally from northeast Pennsylvania. While living there, she obtained her associates degree in dental hygiene from Luzerne college in 2000. She moved to Bluffton, South Carolina in 2011, where she obtained her certification to administer infiltration anesthesia in 2012 and bachelor of science degree in human services from the University of South Carolina Beaufort in 2018. Tammy believes in a lifetime commitment to education so she can provide the best care and education possible to her patients. In her spare time, Tammy enjoys spending time with her 15 year old daughter, Megan. Together they enjoy running, weight training, kayaking, hiking, and biking.
